When you hear the term Rehab you probably think of what most people think of: a place – either a resort style private rehab center or an institutional style hospital – where individuals with debilitating addictions go away for 28 to 30 days and then head home again. Many individuals and families approach PA addiction rehab that way – a short-term, high acuity stay off the grid for medication, counseling and fresh perspective.
But Emerging Clinical Evidence Continues to Support that Short-Term Residential Treatment Alone is Insufficient
The traditional “28 day stay” is what’s known in the field as “Short Term Inpatient Rehab”. It often includes a dedicated period of detoxification for separation from substances that are highly physically addictive. After detoxification, patients transition into the more focused therapeutic programs offered at PA addiction rehab. Inpatient drug rehabs provide intensive therapy in a medically monitored and fully supervised environment. Even as evidence continues to show that only entering an inpatient drug rehab is not enough, it’s a vital phase in the “continuum of care”.
The …What?
The phrase continuum of care refers to the different types of rehab programs which, when thoughtfully coordinated and combined, offer patients the highest potential for achieving and maintaining lifelong sobriety.
Partial Hospitalization
After patients have completed treatment at a detox and an inpatient drug rehab, the best thing for them to do is often to enter a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), otherwise known as a Day Treatment Program. PHPs are structured rehab programs that offer therapeutic supports at nearly the same level as inpatient drug rehab centers. They are usually offered during weekdays, usually from 9:00AM to 2:30 – 3:00 PM or later in the afternoon. This level of care offers patients an opportunity to begin to participate in recovery fellowships and integrate back into daily life, while still receiving support from clinical professionals.
Intensive Outpatient Rehab
Intensive Outpatient Rehab is even less intensive than Partial Hospitalization. IOPs are usually offered during the day-time or evening hours, for 1.5 to 3 hours at a time, three to five days per week. Intensive Outpatient Rehab offers clients even more opportunity to engage in daily life, usually including taking on full-time jobs, while still receiving structured care from experienced addiction professionals.
Traditional Outpatient Rehab
After IOP, many patients choose to continue outpatient treatment at the least restrictive level possible. This level of care is alternately known as General Outpatient or Traditional Outpatient. In Traditional Outpatient, clients sometimes attend single sessions – either group therapy or individual therapy sessions – one time weekly to continue to work on goals and problems unique to the ongoing recovery experience.
